A man who allegedly drove off with a police van appeared in the Ogies Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, Mpumalanga police said.

Captain Leonard Hlathi said the case against Silence Sekgobela (27) was postponed to 2 June for a formal bail application.

Sekgobela was arrested on Sunday, after two police officers stopped to investigate why a truck was standing still in the middle of the road.

As soon as the police stopped Sekgobela allegedly hit the left window of the van with his fist, breaking it, and threatened the police with a weapon.

He then jumped into the van and drove off with it.

Sekgobela was also alleged to have attacked the driver of the truck, said Hlathi.
