A 17-year-old boy appeared in Durban's Umzinto Magistrate's Court for allegedly stabbing a fellow pupil with a knife in the chest, police said on Wednesday.
"He appeared in court on Tuesday and case was remanded until 17 June for the matter to be dealt with in terms of the alternate dispute resolution," said Captain Vincent Pandarum.
This entails the intervention of social workers with the aim of rehabilitating the offender.
Pandarum said the pupil, charged with assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, allegedly stabbed a 15-year-old boy at Roseville Secondary School on Monday during the morning break.
"It is alleged that the victim was with friends on the school grounds during the morning break when he got into a dispute with the accused.
"They began pushing each other around until the accused pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim once in the chest before running away," he said.
The boy was then attended to by a teacher who rushed him to the G J Crookes Hospital in Scottburgh for treatment.
The accused was arrested and detained at the Umzinto SAPS, said Pandarum.
He said the boys used to be friends until they split up for reasons unknown.
Investigations were continuing.
