An accused in the murder of safari ranch owner Franz Richter told the High Court in Johannesburg on Wednesday that he was high on dagga when he made a false confession, SABC radio news reported.

Richter was gunned down in a robbery, allegedly orchestrated by his common law wife Celiwe Mkhwanazi. His wife and her lover Ronnie Khumalo allegedly hired hit men to kill Richter.

Murder suspect Tshepo Chirwa said he had been smoking dagga in the reeds where police caught him. And he confessed to what he overheard the police say about the murder. He said the dagga had added to his state of confusion.

The confession is subject to investigation and has become a trial within a trial.

Prosecutors would try to find a loophole in the alleged false confession as the case continued, SABC reported.
