Human Rights lawyer George Bizos SC is in a Johannesburg hospital after falling ill this week, The Star reported on Thursday.

"He's coming on nicely," his wife Arethe said.

Bizos, 80, is at the Wits University Donald Gordon Medical Centre for tests. The centre is a private academic hospital in Parktown.

His son, Professor Damon Bizos, works at the hospital.

He told The Star they were not yet sure what was wrong with his father, and tests were being carried out.

"At the moment he's fine, and he's stable and well."

Bizos made his name as a human rights lawyer during the apartheid era. He defended Nelson Mandela, Govan Mbeki and Walter Sisulu in the Rivonia Treason trial.

Although now retired, he is a presidential appointee to the Judicial Service Commission.
