Get involved, parents told

Parents must get involved in the election of school governing bodies (SGBs) to ensure better education for their children, the Democratic Alliance in Gauteng said on Thursday.
"An effective school governing body ensures that excellence is recognised and valued, and poor performance is rooted out," party provincial education spokesman Khume Ramulifho said.
Experience showed capable schools worked best when parents were involved.
"This type of body ensures that teachers are able to properly teach; discipline amongst learners is instilled; and safety of both learners and teachers is guaranteed.
"Parents have the right to choose the medium of instruction of their children, as the school governing body decides on instruction language in conjunction with the provincial education department."
Not enough had been done to urge parents to take part in SGB
elections.
"The DA encourages parents to be involved in their children's
education. And
as much as we support the process, we caution
parents to focus on good governance instead of politicisation of
school administration," Ramulifho said.
