Three people were seriously injured when two trucks collided on the N12 highway near Benoni on the East Rand on Thursday, Johannesburg paramedics said.

ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks said one truck crashed into the back of the other near the Tom Jones Road offramp.

"When the paramedics arrived on the scene, they found two people lying on the floor and one driver still entrapped. The two were treated for multiple injuries and transported to hospital in a serious but stable condition."

Banks said the driver had to be freed using the jaws of life and was flown to hospital in a critical condition.
