The burnt body of an unidentified man was found near the railway line in Thabong in the Free State, police said on Friday.

The body of the man, believed to be between the ages of 25 and 30, was found at around 8.40am on Thursday, said Sergeant Malebo Khosana.

"The victim's body was already in a state which raised a belief that he might have been lying there for several days," said Khosana.

"It was evident that a tyre was used to burn the victim as pieces of burnt tyres were found around him."

Khosana said the victim also had four stab wounds to his body.

Police had opened a murder docket.

Khosana appealed to members of the community who might know the victim to contact the police at 057 916 2206 or to visit the Welkom State Mortuary to identify him.
