About 100 private and public sector doctors marched through the Durban city centre after midday on Friday, demanding better salaries.

The crowd had earlier converged at Botha?s Garden, holding placards and singing.

Some posters read: ?Understaffed, overworked and underpaid? and ?Better to be a bus driver than a doctor?, in reference to an earlier article that junior doctors earned less than bus drivers.

Police were monitoring the march.

Metro police spokesperson Superintendent Joyce Khuzwayo said the protesters were ?very peaceful?.

No incidents of violence had been reported.

Doctors were also marching in Pretoria and were expected to march to the health department office in Bisho in the Eastern Cape.
