A body of a 50-year-old woman was found in a long drop toilet pit in Kenton on Sea, Port Alfred, police said on Monday.

The body was found covered with newspapers inside a neighbour's long drop toilet, said Captain Mali Govender.

The woman's brother and daughter saw drops of blood around their outside toilet in Ekhuphumleni township.

"Police were called and they found traces of blood close to their toilet leading towards a neighbour's toilet. They then made the discovery of the badly beaten body of the victim in the toilet."

With the assistance of municipal workers, police retrieved the body.

Although the cause of death was unknown, police said the woman sustained wounds to the head.

A murder case was opened and experts were combing the area for clues.

No one had been arrested following the incident.
