At least 20 people were injured in a head-on collision between a taxi and two bakkies in Langlaagte, south of Johannesburg on Friday, paramedics said.

Most of the taxi passengers were flung out of the vehicle during the collision, said ER 24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak.

People with multiple injuries were scattered across the Nasrec and Main Reef roads, he said.

The driver of the taxi was in a critical condition, trapped behind the steering wheel of the vehicle he was driving.

Paramedics had to use the jaws of life to free him from the wreckage.

Although the exact cause of the accident was not known, paramedics said one of the vehicles might have swerved into oncoming traffic.

The injured were rushed to various hospitals in the area and the accident scene had been cleared, paramedics said.
