The development follows the resignation of another board member on Friday bringing the number of those who have stepped down to seven, the SABC reported.

Independent Electoral Commission chief electoral officer Pansy Tlakula was the latest to resign from the board, leaving it without a quorum.

Nyanda met the remaining members of the board on Friday. He said a new board will be adopted speedily.

"Because of this situation it means that I have to as speedily as possible to inform the authorities that would be responsible for the appointment of an interim board, in this case the president of the country, to proceed with haste to have this situation addressed," he told the broadcaster.

The flurry of resignations occurred after reports of the SABC's financial woes surfaced in April — the SABC is seeking a R2- billion bail-out from the government.

Parliamentary Communications Portfolio Committee chairperson Ishmael Vadi earlier said the SABC board was now totally dysfunctional.

On Thursday, Bheki Khumalo, Andile Mbeki and Desmond Golding tendered their resignations.
