No taxi strike - Zille
Tue, 17 Feb 2009 12:00
City of Cape Town Mayor Helen Zille has assured commuters there would not be a taxi strike this week.
Various emails have been circulating, warning Cape Town residents of an impending taxi strike.
Hundreds of thousands of commuters were stranded by last week?s three day strike action in the Peninsula.
Zille said she has spoken to the National Taxi Association?s Chairperson and was given assurance that there would be no trouble next week.
Mayoral spokesman Robert Macdonald said: "She?s also stressed that we will not engage anybody on the basis of violence or threats of violence. We are going to be meeting with the National Taxi Association on Wednesday to discuss some of the issues which concern them, and we are hoping that that?s going to be a peaceful and a productive meeting."
Meanwhile, police say emails warning the public of another taxi strike are unfounded.
However, the SAPS adds its members are on high alert should the industrial action go ahead.
Golden Arrow says it does have contingency plans in place should the strike go ahead.
