Eleven people were injured in a fire at Durban's Royal hotel on Monday morning, paramedics said.

Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said several Lions supporters were among guests evacuated from the hotel when the fire broke out.

Botha said the entire building was covered in smoke and that 11 people were taken to St Augustines hospital.

"They will be treated for smoke inhalation," said Botha, adding that all the patients were hotel staff.

The fire is believed to have started in the boiler room but the cause is not known.

Hotel management and fire-fighters were doing a roll-call by 8.30am to ensure that the entire building had been evacuated.
