More questions have been raised about whether the African National Congress hid corruption by not firing Carl Niehaus when it first became aware he had committed fraud.

The former spokesperson resigned from the party on Tuesday but will stay on as a normal ANC member.

The ruling party said that it only became aware of Niehaus's financial problems after employing him in November last year.

However, it was only after the Mail & Guardian published details of the allegations that he resigned from office.

The ANC's Jessie Duarte spoke to Talk Radio 702's John Robbie on Wednesday.

"In this particular case, do you accept what I am saying that ANC Paul Mashatile found out that a senior official was involved in corruption and it was not made public? Do you accept that?" asked John.

"John, I think that the way to go in this matter is to accept what Paul Mashatile says and is going to decide in this matter," said Duarte.
