Five children and a mother driving them to school were seriously injured in a crash in Queensburgh outside Durban on Wednesday morning, paramedics said.

Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said the children, between five and 12 years, were being driven down Kingsdale road in Mount Vernon when another vehicle went through a yield sign and hit their car on the side.

Their car overturned and all the occupants were seriously injured.

The driver of the other vehicle was unscathed.

Botha said the woman and children were driven to the city's St Augustine's hospital for treatment.
