US R&B singer Robert Kelly, popularly known as R Kelly, was never considered as a suspect in an investment scam but was merely a witness, his management said on Thursday.

Lawyers of the American star, who will perform in Johannesburg and Cape Town later this month, met with members of the SA Police Service in Sandton, Johannesburg, earlier.

"[It was] confirmed that Mr Kelly was never considered a suspect in their investigation but merely a witness who could help them get to the bottom of the matter.

"The meeting went very well, was extremely cordial, and the police expressed their satisfaction with the assistance rendered by Mr Kelly.

As far as Mr Kelly is concerned, the matter is now closed."

The meeting was initially supposed to take place on Tuesday but was postponed because Kelly was too busy.

A Durban woman, Busisiwe Priscilla Zakwe, implicated R Kelly in the alleged investment scam that apparently swindled money out of more than 50 people, many of them pensioners.

State prosecutor Blackie Swart wrote a letter to Kelly's agent Jason Miller earlier this year requesting the singer to explain his involvement in the scam but he did not receive any response.

Zakwe was arrested in 2005 for allegedly taking thousands of rands from investors by promising them they would benefit from ticket sales if they brought an R Kelly tour to the country that year.

Kelly never appeared in the country, but Zakwe claimed she deposited R10.5-million into his account.
