Two women were assaulted and robbed by two men after withdrawing a large amount of money at an ATM in Mkondeni in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Friday.

The incident took place soon after the two returned to their work place after having withdrawn a large amount of cash for employees' wages on Thursday evening, said Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram.

"Upon entering the front door, they (the women) were confronted by two unknown men, one of them armed with a handgun and ordered them to hand over their handbags."

The men assaulted the women and snatched their handbags, one of which contained an undisclosed amount of money withdrawn earlier.

They also took a cheque book and a cellphone before they fled in a silver Honda Ballade parked outside.

Police appealed to anyone with information to contact Detective Captain Neleen Maharaj of the Alexandra Road Detective Service on 033-845-7713 or 084-851-7809, or call CrimeStop on 08600-10111.
