A 23-year-old man was arrested for the alleged abduction and murder of a three-year-old girl in Khayelitsha, Western Cape police said on Sunday.

"The mother reported her daughter missing on Thursday afternoon, after she had been informed that her little girl had been abducted by her former boyfriend," Captain Frederick Charles van Wyk said.

"It was alleged that the boyfriend fetched the child at her Creche after the mother decided to end their relationship earlier that day. He informed the mother that he took the child and that he needed an amount of money in order for her child to be reunited with her again."

Police including a combined task team, began investigating. On Saturday afternoon they arrested the boyfriend, after he was hiding in the Enkanini Informal Settlement in Harare, Khayelitsha.

"After thorough questioning by police, the 23-year-old suspect took police to the area where he allegedly stabbed the little girl and hid her body.

"She was found amongst bushes with multiple stab wounds all over her body."

He is in custody and will appear on charges of abduction and murder in court soon.
