A man who shot and killed an 11-year-old boy with a hunting rifle was arrested on Tuesday in Sandton, police said.

The boy from Limpopo had been visiting his grandmother, who was working as a domestic worker at a house in Parkmore, said a police official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

"The boy arrived at the house today [Tuesday] and stayed in the domestic worker's outside room.

The owner of the house and his wife heard a noise inside the room.

The man took his hunting rifle and went outside to investigate as he thought there was an intruder.

He then saw that someone was inside the room, which was locked from the inside.

He opened fire, shooting the boy and fatally wounding him.

The man was in police custody and would appear in court soon, said the source.
