A man who allegedly shot and killed an 11-year-old boy with a hunting rifle at a house in Parkmore will appear in the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Thursday, police said.

Inspector Moses Maphakela said the 35-year-old man, who was arrested in Sandton on Tuesday, will be facing a charge of murder.

He could however not confirm a statement issued by another officer on Tuesday, which said the boy had been visiting his grandmother from Limpopo at the time of the incident.

Maphakela could also not confirm if the arrested man was the employer of the boy's grandmother.

"We are still investigating the matter so further details will be released then," he said.

A police officer who spoke to Sapa on condition of anonymity on Tuesday said the boy arrived at the Parkmore house on Tuesday and stayed in the domestic worker's outside room.

Later in the evening, the owner of the house and his wife allegedly heard a noise inside the room. Thinking that there was an intruder, the man took his hunting rifle and went to outside to investigate.

He allegedly then shot the boy, killing him instantly.
