Several areas in Johannesburg were without power on Thursday morning due to overloading, while some Randburg residents did not have electricity following cable theft, an official said.

Johannesburg City Power spokesperson Louis Pieterse said people tend to overload the system by switching on heaters.

"Throughout Johannesburg, we are receiving reports of overloading. We are reacting to the complaints as they come in and doing the necessary repairs," said Pieterse.

The areas where overloading was the highest, seemed to be in Malvern, Bellevue, Kensington and Yeoville, he said.

Meanwhile, in North Riding in Randburg, cable theft occurred on Wednesday night, leaving the area without electricity.

"That is affecting between 200 and 300 consumers," said Pieterse.
