Five people were arrested in a raid on a brothel on Durban's Clark Road on Thursday afternoon, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

The owner of the house was arrested for allegedly using the premises as brothel, along with four people believed to be prostitutes, police spokesperson Inspector Michael Read said.

Police found cocaine with an estimated value of R20 000, a drug test kit, a batch of condoms and razor blades.

"The investigation took about six months in Umbilo's seven premises which were identified. The owner was found to be in contravention of the Sexual Offences Act and Drug-Trafficking Act."

Vice chairman of Umbilo Community Policing Forum Tony Blaunfeldt commended the police and said the raid would send a clear message that brothels were not acceptable in residential areas.

"The community has brought this to the police. We are grateful because this is pulling the neighbourhood down and as this is a residential area it is not acceptable to law-abiding citizens."
