A robber may not walk again after both his legs were broken when a vigilante mob attacked him in Mthatha, Eastern Cape police said on Thursday.

Superintendent Mzukisi Fatyela said police were taking a zero tolerance approach to vigilante justice and were expecting to arrest members of the mob soon.

"Police are following several leads because we know the residents are aware of who the members of the mob are," he said.

Two men robbed a hair salon at the weekend, taking R600 in cash and some jewellery.

"While they were fleeing the scene, a mob of residents followed them.

"They were shot at, beaten and stabbed".

During the shooting, a 17-year-old bystander was also struck by a bullet and was recovering in hospital.

One robber's legs were broken and a portion of a leg dismembered.

"I don't think he will walk again," said Fatyela.

The other robber also sustained severe wounds.

Both men were in a critical condition in hospital.

The cash and the jewellery were recovered.

Fatyela said police were hoping to make an arrest by the end of the week.
