A head-on collision on the N3 southbound near Spruitview on Saturday has left five dead, Ekurhuleni metro police said on Saturday.

A white Corsa sedan was driving north on the N3 near the Leondale offramp at 12.45am when it lost control, jumping over the dividing space and into the oncoming traffic, said Inspector Jimmy Maboko.

The sedan collided, head-on with a green bakkie driving south.

Four people, including the driver, were killed in the accident. The bakkie's only passenger, a woman, was also killed in the accident.

An 18-year-old-girl in the sedan and the male driver of the bakkie have survived though both were severely injured.

Both were taken to Natalspruit hospital in Katlehong.

Maboko said the five people in the sedan were from Soweto. The bakkie and its occupants were from Botswana.

The N3 southbound has been reduced to one lane as emergency workers attempt to clear the wreckage.
