African National Congress leader Jacob Zuma is reportedly considering revealing taped conversations between former National Prosecuting Authority bosses Bulelani Ngcuka and Leonard McCarthy to free himself from his corruption charges.
The NPA is currently reviewing submissions from Zuma's lawyers, as it decides whether it should go ahead with prosecuting him.
Zuma is accused of corruption relating to the arms deal.
The ANC president's legal team reportedly has evidence obtained from telephone taps of conversations involving former president Thabo Mbeki and former Scorpions boss McCarthy.
The Business Day newspaper is reporting that Ngcuka and businessmen Saki Macozoma and Mzi Khumalo may also have been spied on.
It is not known at this stage where the tapes come from or how Zuma's legal team obtained them.
However, these reports are likely to strengthen claims from Zuma that he is the victim of a political conspiracy if he is able to show an improper link between Mbeki and the people investigating him.
Both the NPA and Zuma's lawyers are not speaking on the matter in public at the moment.
