Thabo Mbeki's office has shot down claims that the former president could have been recorded talking to ex-Scorpions boss Leonard McCarthy about the investigation into ANC President Jacob Zuma.

It is being reported in two newspapers on Thursday morning that the African National Congress leader has included the tape recordings as part of his submissions to the National Prosecuting Authority in a bid to prevent a trial from taking place.

Zuma is accused of corruption after taking money from businessman Schabir Shaik who was convicted and sentenced in 2004.

Mbeki's office said claims he could have been recorded talking to NPA officials about the investigation into Zuma are a lie.

It said he never spoke to McCarthy about the matter which is being alleged.

It is also claimed that former NPA boss Bulelani Ngcuka, and businessmen Mzi Khumalo and Saki Macobzoma were also taped.

They are reportedly furious at being recoreded without their knowledge and at the fact the tapes have fallen into private hands.

There is no official comment on this issue from the NPA or Zuma's lawyers.
