The National Prosecuting Authority has indicated that its case against Jackie Selebi is stronger than it has ever been, but the National Police Commissioner is upset that the trial is to be delayed yet again.

The NPA confirmed on Thursday that it intends bringing an application for his trial to be delayed.

Prosecutors said although they were reluctant to apply for a postponement they were forced to do so because of several delays caused by pre-trial litigation.

Selebi has responded furiously, saying he wants his day in court.

"I hope that they will not avoid the trial. They must go there and prove the case that they made so eloquently in the media, over a period of two and a half years," said Selebi on Thursday.

He said he believes prosecutors have an ulterior motive and are running a campaign to discredit both him and the South African Police Service.

"The legal process, that involves twists and turns that are man-made in an attempt to avoid getting to the point of actually dispensing justice, has given me lots of problems," said Selebi.
