National Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi has revealed that he intends to plead not guilty to the charges against him.

He has expressed his anger and frustration at the National Prosecuting Authority which has confirmed that it intends asking for a postponement of his trial.

Selebi is meant to go on trial in under three weeks.

The NPA has dismissed the top cop's claims that is has an ulterior motive, saying the postponement application is not based on the strength of its case.

Selebi has thrown down the gauntlet to the NPA, saying his trial must not be delayed because he wants an opportunity to prove his innocence.

"I tell you now that I am going to plead not guilty because I am not guilty and I'm in a position to prove that I am innocent," said Selebi.

The commissioner has re-iterated he never took money from anyone for favours.

"Not at all! Not at all! There has never been such a thing. I will be a fool to do such a thing. It has never happened," exclaimed Selebi.

He maintains the case against him is a conspiracy to discredit him, a claim that is being strongly denied by prosecutors.
