Five police officers were rescued after their ski-boat overturned in Port Edward on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast on Monday, paramedics said.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said the SA Police Service officers were out at sea on a ski-boat when it overturned.

Members from the National Sea Rescue Institute managed to lift four men from the water but a fifth was trapped underneath the boat.

Botha said he was pulled back to shore where paramedics treated him for near-drowning symptoms.

He was taken to Margate hospital for further treatment.
