A man suspected of killing two Booysens policemen was shot and killed on Monday in Empangeni, KwaZulu-Natal police said.
Senior Superintendent Jay Naicker said Thabani Ndebele was suspected to have gunned down two police officers from Booysens, Gauteng, who were transporting him for a court appearance in KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday.
The bodies of the two were found on Thursday at Harrismith in the Free State and Babanango in Northern KwaZulu-Natal respectively.
Naicker said Ndebele was shot at around midnight after investigations led police to a house in Nseleni township, Empangeni.
"It is alleged that the suspect was lying on the bed when members of the National Intervention Unit stormed in, he put up a fight and
Naicker said Ndebele was shot in his upper body and died on the scene.
Police recovered two 9mm pistols and an R5 rifle in the house.
"A 28-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly assisting Ndebele after the escape. He is currently being questioned by detectives regarding his involvement in the escape."
Naicker said the man allegedly picked up Ndebele from Babanango and hid him in his room.
Ndebele was originally from the Hlabisa area in Northern KwaZulu-Natal.
He was wanted for various offences including house breaking and armed robbery.
