A young boy was injured when he fell into a hole linked to the storm water drainage system along Empire Road in Milpark on Friday, Gauteng emergency services said.
Netcare 911 spokesperson Mark Stokoe said the boy had jumped over a barrier alongside the road and fell into the 12-metre-deep inspection hole.
The boy, a resident at the Twilight Children's Home, was conscious when paramedics called out to him. He complained of pain in his leg, chest and back. His leg was fractured.
Stokoe said the Special Rescue Unit from the fire department assisted paramedics to go down the hole using a harness in order to treat the boy.
"They began basic treatment on the boy, as well as fitting a harness so that he could be hoisted up using a pulley system," he said.
The boy was brought to the surface and taken to the hospital for further treatment.
