African National Congress Youth League President Julius Malema has called on the University of Cape Town to transform itself to ensure more black youngsters can gain entry.

He also called for certain black children to receive subsidised education.

Addressing UCT students on Wednesday, Malema did not mince his words, acccusing the university of keeping fees high to exclude blacks.

"Forces that are opposed to our revolution are still here. We must change the management of this university and also the lecturers," Malema said, according to the Cape Times.

"This is our university, we must change the look of this university, (it) should reflect South Africa," he continued.

Some students responded by booing the ANCYL leader, who replied: "Don't provoke us, it is us (the ANC) who brought the nonsensical Apartheid regime down. No opposition (party) will ever defeat the ANC.

Asked for a response, UCT spokesperson Ray Hartle defended the university, insisting that it supported transformation.

"We've put in place programmes to reflect our commitment to transformation across the institution," Hartle declared.
