The National Taxi Alliance (NTA) on Monday said it has called
off its planned national strike this week, in light of the
elections.
"We have since reviewed our timing of the strike and we have
come to the conclusion that our strike coincides with the election
date," said general secretary Alpheus Mlalazi in a statement.
He said the strike scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, was
aimed at getting the government to respond to unanswered questions
about the Rapid Bus Transit system and other issues relating to
subsidies and permits.
He said the strike on election day on Wednesday would have
disadvantaged voters who depend on taxis to transport them to
voting stations.
"Post the elections all our structures will convene to make
representation to the new government and if our pleas are ignored,
we will be left without a choice but to exercise our democratic
right to withhold our labour and to protest by activating the
rolling strike."
NTA had resolved at its March meeting to go on strike from 21 April.
