The 26-year-old Democratic Alliance youth leader in Mpumalanga who was arrested on Monday morning for alleged intimidation was released on R500 bail, police said.
Superintendent Sibongile Nkosi said Stanley Zondi appeared at the KwaMhlanga Magistrate's Court after an African National Congress member laid a charge of intimidation against him in Tweefontein on Saturday.
Zondi will appear again in court on 19 May.
DA MPL Anthony Benadie said that while the party was relieved that Zondi was safe and granted bail, it was disgusted that he was arrested in the first place.
According to a party's statement issued earlier on Monday, the case against Zondi followed the youth leader helping to remove a drunk audience member from a public meeting addressed by DA MPL Clive Hatch.
"Police in the Thembisele Municipality have buckled to ANC pressure, by arresting Mr Zondi using a factless allegation as their motive."
"This is yet another attempt by the ANC to minimise the ever increasing level of support the DA is enjoying in what has previously been ANC strong-holds," Benadie said.
He said it was clear that the ANC was frightened by the upcoming election day as it was aware that the party faced their worst results ever.
"As such the ANC will do anything to steal the election as they clearly cannot compete with other political parties on a levelled playing field," Benadie said.
He urged voters not be afraid of the alleged intimidation and harassment by the ANC, but to use their votes on Wednesday to stop the ruling party from "power abuse and achieving a two-thirds majority".
