The DA on Monday called on the KwaZulu-Natal department of safety to release the report of a commission of inquiry into police inefficiency in the province.

The commission was instituted with much fanfare by the former safety MEC Bheki Cele in 2005 but its findings have not been released.

"We believe the time has come for KwaZulu-Natal's provincial government to come clean on the outcome of the commission of inquiry into police inefficiency," said John Steenhuisen of the Democratic Alliance in a statement.

Steenhuisen said the commission's work was supposed to have been completed in 2006.

He said his party was in possession of documents which showed that millions of rands in taxpayers' money was spent on the commission and he did not understand why the report was not released.

"This is a ridiculous situation, especially considering the amount of public money spent on the commission which the DA conservatively estimates to be in the region of some R7-million."

He said it appeared the department was "ducking" for cover on this issue.

"The DA rejects former MEC Bheki Cele's statement to a Sunday newspaper that the commission's work had been 'satisfactorily completed' and that the report was not being made public because of sensitive criminal investigations."

The department was not immediately available to comment.
