About 20 workers evicted from the farm Spruitfontein near Rustenburg have been temporarily accommodated in the Marikana Community Hall, the Rustenburg municipality said on Sunday.
"We have accommodated them in Marikana while we are consulting with the department of land affairs to see what action to take next," said municipal spokesperson Butler Matlapeng. One of the workers, Fanki Molelekeng, said farmer Eddie Engelbrecht evicted them on Thursday morning after he obtained a court order to do so. "Our belongings were dumped next to the road, we were not given time to pack," he said. He explained that Engelbrecht claimed to have bought the farm from its previous owner. Matlapeng said the farmer could have notified the municipality about the pending eviction, so that alternative accommodation could have been arranged. "Most of them have been living at the farm for more than 20 years," he said.
