A security guard was shot dead on Saturday during a cash-in-transit heist in Salt River, Cape Town police said.

Sergeant Hilton Malila said that two security guards were collecting cash boxes from a business on Malta and Goldsmith roads at 9am, when they were approached by six armed men.

"The suspects got out of their vehicle and began shooting at the guards, who were on their way back after collecting money from the business.

"The one guard managed to take cover, but the other guard holding the cash box was shot in the upper neck. The men then grabbed the money from him and fled."

ER24 spokesman Tristan Wadeley said paramedics were summoned to the scene, but the guard had already died.

"The second guard was treated for emotional shock and taken by ER24 ambulance to Cape Town Medi-Clinic," Wadeley said.

Police were still searching for the suspects, Malila said.
