SABC radio journalist Andries Sathekge (57), died last night in a Pretoria hospital, the public broadcaster reported on Saturday.

Sathekge went into hospital for heart surgery on April 24 and had been in hospital since.

SABC spokesperson, Kaizer Kganyago commended Sathekge, who had 25 years service with the public broadcaster and had covered the Truth and Reconciliation Commission among many others.

"He was a pillar of strength in his division in the Tshwane region and in his last assignment, he served the people in the country during the elections. He was a soldier of democracy," he said.

Sathekge is survived by his wife and two children.
