Police continued their probe into Friday’s fatal hostel fire that claimed the lives of four people.

Survivors of the Two Oceans Backpackers fire accused tenants of keeping the fire escapes locked.

Police were investigating whether this may have led to the deaths of the victims.

The area remained cordoned off as investigators probed the cause of the fire.

Shortly after the fire on Friday morning, survivors told Eyewitness News fire escapes were locked.

This could form a vital part in the police's investigation into the four deaths and result in culpable homicide charges.

However, no one has been able to track down the two main tenants.

It was alleged they had subdivided the rooms at the hostel to accommodate more people.
