Seven people accused of the murder and attempted murder of ANC supporters in Swayimani were remanded in custody by the Camperdown Regional Court on Friday until their bail hearing.
Magistrate Thys Taljaard said Mphati Gumede (29) Fonikosi Gumede (41) Zwelemphi Gumede (71) Phiwe Gumede (23) Bosani Gumede (21) Mzamiseni Gumede (20) and Eqiguweni Gumede (31) would remain in custody until their bail hearing on 5 June.
Their appearance in the KwaZulu-Natal court arises from the 27 April shooting of African National Congress supporters as they celebrated their party's electoral victory with a parade in Swayimani.
Zenusela Hlongwa was shot dead and six others were injured. The accused each face one charge of murder and six charges of attempted murder.
Outside the court, police separated supporters from the ANC and its rival Inkatha Freedom Party who were there to demonstrate.
