Western Cape Premier Helen Zille has accused the previous administration of transferring a massive portion of housing land to the national government for political reasons.

Lynne Brown's administration approved the transfer of more than 1000 hectares of prime housing land to the Housing Development Agency (HDA) a day before the 22 April elections.

Copies of the agreement were handed to members of the media on Friday.

"We felt it was very important to flag this issue that there's been acid stripping going on. I heard rumours but I actually didn't believe it. We tried to follow it up at the time and we couldn't get anywhere," Zille said.

The premier said she was seeking legal opinion whether the transfer was legitimate adding that the moved was aimed at impeding housing delivery in the Western Cape.

"The timing of the transfer, the manner of the transfer and the political context of the transfer raises many questions around principles that go to the heart of how government should be conducted under the Constitution," commented the premier.
