Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe officially unveiled the busts of struggle veterans Oliver and Adelaide Tambo in Pretoria on Saturday.

The sculptures were erected at Oliver Tambo House, the official residence of the deputy president.

There were smiles all around as the bust of the man and the woman, known affectionately as the parents of the nation, were unveiled.

Motlanthe told guests, who gathered, that Oliver Tambo restored hope and a sense of purpose to the liberation movement during trying times and that the struggle veteran's concern for the plight of the poor underpinned his status as a founding member of the African National Congress Youth League.

The deputy president said this is the same concern that drives the ruling party still.

Motlanthe added that government enjoyed an unparallel practice of non-sexism partly due to the legacy left behind by people like the Tambos.
