Steven Muzhingi from Zimbabwe has won the 2009 Comrades Marathon.

Second place was Leonard Shvetsov of Russia while more than 12 000 athletes from 47 countries took to the streets in the Comrades.

In a superb win, Mazhingi ran a fantastic time of 5.2326 only 2.5 minutes short of the course record.

Olesya Nurgalieva won the 2009 women's Comrades Marathon in an unofficial time of 6:12.08. Her twin sister, Elena Nurgalieva was second in 6:12.11 followed by another Russian, Tatyana Zhirkova in 6:15:00

This year the 90km race began in the City of Durban and ended in Pietermaritzburg.
