Nineteen schoolchildren were arrested in Kempton Park on Friday afternoon when police found them having a drunken party in a flat, Ekurhuleni metro police said.

Neighbours complained about the noise and police and metro police arrived at a block of flats on Kempton Road shortly before 2pm and found the group, wearing school uniform, having a party in a flat, Inspector Mveli Nhlapo said.

Eight boys, aged between 16 and 19, and 11 girls, between 14 and 19, were arrested. Nhlapo said they were "uncontrollable".

"The flat belongs to one of the 19-year-old boys, who lives there with his sister. His parents are in Mozambique."

The teenagers, from four schools in the area, were taken to the local police station and locked up in holding cells until their parents came to fetch them. They were made to pay fines of R150 each.

Metro police intended visiting their schools on Monday to warn children about the dangers of alcohol.

"They must concentrate and study and forget about a nice time," Nhlapo said.
