A police officer has been shot and killed after an argument erupted at a rugby braai in Pretoria.

Inspector Marius van Dyk (48) was celebrating the Blue Bulls' victory at a house in Danville on Saturday night when he became involved in a disagreement with his girlfriend.

A group of people, who were also at the celebration, also became involved in the incident and van Dyk?s girlfriend's brother fired a warning shot into the air in an effort to calm the situation but the officer was shot in the chest as he tried to grab the man's firearm away from him.

"He got into an argument with his girlfriend then the owner of the house went to fetch his firearm. He fired a warning shot and Inspector van Dyk then turned around and stormed down the man. A shot went off and Inspector van Dyk was wounded in the chest, he died on the scene," explained the police's Tessa Jansen.

Another man is believed to have been injured in the head during the shooting however his whereabouts are unknown.
