Nine policemen have been arrested following the death of a
19-year-old Atteridgeville youth they allegedly assaulted, Gauteng
police said on Tuesday.
Senior Superintendent Noxolo Kweza said that on Monday around
8pm the teenager's father went to the Atteridgeville police station
to report a case of housebreaking and theft of R1700 against his
own son.
He was then accompanied by the police, who included an inspector
and eight student constables, to find the boy.
The teenager was taken to the police station for questioning,
and was allegedly assaulted by the officers with a hose pipe.
He eventually pointed out one of his friends as the one he gave
the money too, but the friend denied this.
Police allegedly continued assaulting the teenager until around
2am when his father decided it was enough and took him home.
Kweza said it was on Tuesday morning that the father noticed his
son was struggling to breath and the boy died
moments later.
The father went back to the police station to report that the
son had died and a murder case was opened leading to the arrest of
the policemen, aged between 22 and 50.
"The SAPS is shocked by the allegations against its members and
a situation whereby members become a law unto themselves will not
be tolerated.
"Investigations will continue into the matter," Kweza said.
The officers will appear in the Atteridgeville Magistrate's
Court on soon.
