A convicted prisoner was on the run after escaping from the Pretoria Central Prison on Wednesday.

Mandla Mahlangu managed to break out while working at an upholstery workshop at the facility.

He was sentenced to ten years behind bars for house breaking in 2007.

An internal investigation into the escape is underway.

Correctional Services' Manelisi Wolela said the department’s efforts to prevent escapes was working.

He said only 14 escapes have been recorded since January compared to 24 in the same period in 2008.
