Attorneys for former National Prosecuting Authority head Vusi Pikoli say they were not given notice by the Presidency that a new prosecutions boss will be appointed soon.

The Presidency released a statement on Wednesday clarifying what it called inaccurate media reports about the legal matter between Pikoli and the president.

Earlier this year, Pikoli launched an application challenging the president's decision to fire him.

In the statement, the Presidency said reports Kgalema Motlanthe gave an undertaking that he would not appoint a new NPA head until the court ruled on Pikoli's legal challenge were not true.

Instead, it said Motlanthe undertook that he would give Pikoli's legal team reasonable notice before a new National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) was appointed.

Pikoli's lawyer Aslam Moosajee claimed he required notice so he could launch an application for an urgent interdict.

President Jacob Zuma is mulling over who he would appoint as the country's chief prosecutor.

Mokotedi Mpshe, who announced the decision to drop corruption charges against Zuma, is the acting NDPP.
