The Gauteng branch of the ANC on Wednesday was not bandying around names of whom it would like to see lead the party after the 2012 national conference.

However, provincial secretary David Makhura told reporters in Johannesburg the party was happy with the way the current leadership was carrying out its mandate.

"We have not started the discussion on that [2012 leadership succession]. What we are satisfied with is that the current leadership is doing very well."

He said any preoccupation with leadership discussions would "derail" the organisation and "undermine" its ability to carry out its mandate from the April 2009 elections.

"We can only review their performance at the next national conference in 2012."

Makhura did say, however, "to serve only for a few years does not always bring to the fore the best capabilities of leaders".
