A South African woman has been arrested at a Brazil airport for possession of drugs, police said on Friday.

Senior Superintendent Tummi Golding confirmed an SABC report that a South African national was arrested in Brazil.

But she said the person was not en route to Madrid as reported, but was in fact on her way to South Africa.

Golding, the spokeswoman for Interpol and Crime Intelligence, said she was awaiting a report from the Brazilian authorities on the value of the drugs.

"She was on her way to South Africa. She was arrested by the Brazilian federal police," said Golding.

The SABC reported that x-rays revealed the woman was carrying capsules containing one kilogram of cocaine in her body.

If found guilty, she faces up to 15 years in jail.
